Campus Stormwater Management Concept
The valley is the remnant of a former streambed that once discharged water into Lake Merced. Although the
campus drainage pattern remains generally unchanged, surface runoff now is collected in a network of drains and pipes that carry water
south into the city sewer system. The master plan stormwater management concept restores some measure of natural drainage to the
campus. A network of bioswales collects, filters and discharges water into filtration zones for recharge and storage. New buildings are
equipped to collect and store stormwater, discharging it into storage zones. In parts of the valley, a "daylighted" creek, fed by runoff,
suggests the former stream that once flowed through campus. Ultimately, stormwater could flow again
into Lake Merced, helping to restore the water level.
